Problem: Very weak CO₂ flow, even with a new cylinder
Cause: Blocked CO₂ restrictor
Fix: Clear the tiny restrictor opening
My SodaStream Crystal 3.0 suddenly produced almost no carbonation. I replaced the Quick Connect CO₂ cylinder twice, but the problem remained.
Another clue was that after releasing the carbonation button, a small amount of CO₂ continued to flow for several seconds.
The problem turned out to be a blocked tiny CO₂ passage inside the Quick Connect assembly.
1. Check the cylinder mechanism
First I checked the Quick Connect mechanism.

The cylinder was firmly locked in place and the centre pin moved down when pressing the carbonation button. Trying another cylinder made no difference.
So the problem was somewhere further along the CO₂ path.
2. Remove the carbonation tube
The complete carbonation/injector assembly can be unscrewed.

This exposes the white CO₂ supply tube.
I tested it again at this point. Only a small amount of CO₂ came from the white tube, and it continued flowing for several seconds after releasing the button.
That ruled out the carbonation tube itself.
The restriction had to be further upstream.
3. Remove the top cover
The top cover around the cylinder mechanism is held by three plastic locking clips.
The front clip is easy to see. The other two are located at the sides and are much less obvious. I released these carefully with a flat screwdriver while working the cover loose.

With the cover removed, the internal button and cylinder mechanism becomes accessible.

Taking a few pictures at this stage is useful because the white plastic linkage isn’t particularly obvious when putting everything back together.
4. Remove the button linkage
The white linkage operates the internal CO₂ mechanism.

One of the white components comes off separately.

With these parts out of the way, the Quick Connect gas assembly can be removed.
5. Remove the Quick Connect assembly
This is the black part that connects to the top of the pink Quick Connect cylinder.

The yellow part forms the seal around the cylinder connection.
With the assembly apart, I followed the CO₂ passage through the housing.
6. Find the blocked restrictor
Eventually I found the problem: a very small CO₂ passage in the black plastic assembly.
Almost no air would pass through it.

This also explained why CO₂ continued flowing after releasing the button. Pressure was building before the restriction and could only escape very slowly through the blocked opening.
I first tried compressed air, but this made no difference.
I then carefully pushed a very thin needle through the existing hole.
After doing this, the difference was immediately obvious: considerably more air passed through the opening.
The blockage was gone.
7. The gas housing
For reference, this is what the housing looks like with the yellow seal removed:

These pictures are useful if you’ve already taken yours apart and are trying to work out where the restriction is located.
8. Test before fully reassembling
I partially reassembled the machine and tested the CO₂ flow again.
This time there was an immediate, strong flow from the white tube instead of the weak hiss I had before.
That confirmed the repair.
9. Reassemble the carbonation button
This part caught me out initially.
The easiest assembly order is:
- Clip the second white plastic component onto the internal lever.
- Install the top housing so that this component rests against it correctly.
- Then click the external carbonation button into place from the outside.

The underside of the external button looks like this:

When assembled correctly, the button sits properly in the housing and operates the white linkage underneath.
10. Final result
After completely reassembling the SodaStream, I tested it with water.
Full carbonation was back.
The fault wasn’t the CO₂ cylinder, carbonation tube or button mechanism. It was simply a blocked tiny CO₂ restrictor inside the Quick Connect assembly.
The most useful way to diagnose this problem is to follow the CO₂ path backwards:
Carbonation nozzle → white supply tube → internal restrictor → Quick Connect cylinder
Test the flow at each stage. As soon as the flow becomes strong, you’ve passed the restriction.
In my case, compressed air couldn’t clear the tiny opening, but a thin needle did. After that, the SodaStream Crystal 3.0 worked normally again.
Symptoms that pointed to this fault
- Very little carbonation
- Same problem with multiple CO₂ cylinders
- Very weak gas flow without the water bottle
- Weak flow directly from the white supply tube
- CO₂ continues to flow for several seconds after releasing the button
If your SodaStream Crystal 3.0 CY-CQC-001 shows exactly these symptoms, that tiny restrictor is worth checking before replacing the machine.
